What is BSA?

BSA stands for Body Surface Area and is the calculated surface area of the human body. For medical purposes BSA is most commonly used by NHS DEXA scanners to help calculate body composition and dosages for anti-cancer agents. In fact, it is an important way to calculate dosages for many medicines.

Why would I need to use a Class III Approved scale?

The NAWI directive states that all scales ‘used in the determination of mass in the practice of medicine for the purpose of monitoring, diagnosis and medical treatment’ must be Class III Approved. Class III Approved scales are used by hospitals, GP surgeries, clinics and pharmacies.

Digital weighing scales that are Class III Approved are built, tested, verified and calibrated to meet a specific standard. They undergo far more testing (by a notified EU body) than non approved scales, providing assurance to the user that they are accurate, reliable and provide repeatable results - essential for medical weighing.

If you need a BMI scale, the M-545 can be used to calculate BMI, as well as BSA. Additionally, the scale has a Hold feature (to stabilise the weight reading on the display) and a Tare function (to remove unwanted weight from the reading, such as shoes). All features are accessible via the five buttons on the indicator, which has a bright, clear 3cm high LCD display.

The scale is powered by 6 x AA batteries (which will provide up to 160 hours of use) or can be powered using the mains adaptor which is supplied. The integrated carry handle makes the scale extra portable, and a carry case can also be purchased.
