Telehealth Scales

Telehealth aims to help diagnosis and management of conditions through remote data exchange between patients and health professionals. Home monitoring  helps patients with long-term health conditions such as heart failure, COPD, asthma and diabetes to retain an independence, have confidence that they are being cared for and reduces the burden on hospitals. . Monitoring the weight of these groups is critical in providing reliable and effective care.

There is growing impetus in the government’s wish to provide health care in patients’ homes; an irreversible trend to move care from hospitals back into the community. It is therefore imperative to use medically approved equipment to provide assurance that the results of the remotely collected data are reliable and accurate.

The Non Automatic Weighing Instrument (NAWI) EU Directive 2009/23/EC compels any scale used to monitor, diagnose or treat patients to be Class III approved under the Directive. Class III approved scales are therefore mandatory and without the approval the scale is not legal to use for medical purposes. It is important to note that it is the use of the scale that is relevant. If the scale is used to monitor weight it must be Class III approved. The situation or location of the scale is not relevant; it does not matter if the scale is used in a hospital, a clinic or at home, Class III approval is mandatory.

There are an increasing number of platform providers providing health care solutions for the emerging Tele health programmes run by the NHS. It is important that the scale included in the platform solution is Class III approved. Patients being monitored remotely need to have confidence in the monitoring equipment and the health care professional needs assurance that the results can be relied upon.

Marsden have developed a range of scales with Class III approval and Bluetooth suitable for Telehealth programmes. Marsden Telehealth scales are used to monitor patients’ weight and BMI remotely. Weight measurement data from Marsden scales will be automatically sent to platforms and databases used by health professionals. The data will be used to monitor the health of the patients. Variances can be acted upon immediately by the doctor or nurse.

Marsden Bluetooth scales have a simple, straightforward protocol meaning that the scales can easily be paired with the system software or database to enable data transfer. Marsden software can be changed to enable data to be sent in a format required by system provider. Any changes in software can be flash downloaded to the scales without fuss.

Marsden range of Telehealth scales include M-420BT, M-430BT, M-510BT, M-100BT, M-110BT, M-200BT, M-600BT, M-650BT and M-610BT. All have Class III approval and Bluetooth.  Other scales in the range also have a Bluetooth option.
