  • Marsden M-420 Digital Portable Scale

    What is the M-420?

The Marsden M-420 is a lightweight, portable adult floor scale. It’s an easy to use scale, virtually identical to our M-430 Floor Scale, but has a much higher accuracy (50g increments as opposed to 200g). This makes it perfect when a highly accurate weight reading is required.

Why should I choose the M-420 over the M-430?

The M-420 and M-430 are both robust, portable floor scales. They are both Class III Approved and MDD Approved, therefore approved for weighing in a medical environment for the purpose of monitoring, diagnosis and medical treatment.

Where they differ is in their accuracy. As you can read here, the accuracy of the scale you use should be determined by what you are using it for. The 200g accuracy of the M-430 is suitable for many applications, however for more serious applications - such as weighing children, or weighing adults for critical treatment, the 50g accuracy of the M-420 will be more appropriate.

The 50g graduations will allow you to get a much clearer picture of changes in patient weight.

    Who uses the M-420?

The M-420 is ideal for all hospital wards and departments, with its robust build suitable for constant daily use. Accuracy to 50g means nurses can get high accuracy weight readings for monitoring, treatment and diagnosis purposes. This high accuracy is also essential when weighing diabetic patients, calculating weight for specific antibiotics, for prescribing medication and for weighing children.

What other features does the M-420 have?

The M-420 is covered by the Marsden 4 Year Warranty.

This easy to use floor scale has a non-slip surface, with a robust casing meaning it can withstand years of use. It's light enough to be portable, too, and an optional carry case is available.

To use the scale, simply tap the surface with your foot and it switches on. The digital weight reading can be reversed, so it can face towards or away from the user. The Hold function means the weight reading stays on the screen even after the patient has stepped off.

The M-420 also has a BMI feature - you can enter the height of the patient, and then, when the scale reads the weight, BMI is automatically calculated.

Bluetooth connectivity is available for this medical weighing scale, meaning weight data can be instantly transferred from the scale to a central patient database, via mobile, tablet or PC. This makes the M-420 ideal for speeding up patient weight data capture, and makes it the perfect professional scale for telehealth initiatives.

The scale is powered by 6x AA batteries for over 100 hours of use (6000 weigh ins).

  • Marsden M-420 Digital Portable Scale - White Tile

    What is the M-420?

The Marsden M-420 is a lightweight, portable adult floor scale. The scale is Class III Approved and has a 220kg capacity and readings to the nearest 50g. This version of the scale features a white base for use by people with dementia and visual/spatial impairments.

What is a Class III Approved scale?

The Marsden M-420 is Class III Approved scale which means it has been built, tested, verified and calibrated to a specific standard. The NAWI directive oversees this standard and states all scales ‘used in the determination of mass in the practice of medicine for the purpose of monitoring, diagnosis and medical treatment’ must be Class III Approved. As Approved scales are subject to rigorous testing by an EU notified body, the user is assured that their scale is accurate and reliable.

Why is a white scale ideal for weighing patients with dementia?

With a white base, this version of Marsden’s M-420 (and this version of our M-650 wheelchair scale) are designed for dementia patients to make them feel more comfortable in their surroundings. The pattern, colour or texture of an object can increase stress and the risk of falls, which means that white scales are a more comfortable and safer alternative to the traditional black surface of many weighing scales.

Read more in this blog post.

    Who uses the white M-420?

The white-tiled M-420 has been built with patients with dementia and visual-spatial issues in mind. For patients with these conditions, the white tile reduced risks of falls and stress which may be caused by a traditional black surface. This version of the M-420 is particularly popular with care homes and respite centres.

Why should I choose the M-420?

The Marsden M-420 is a highly robust and lightweight portable scale.

The scale has Hold, Tare and BMI. The weight reading can be reversed on the display, to suit which way you are viewing it, and a tap-on function (press your foot on the scale to power on) means you don’t need to bend down to switch the M-420 on.

The scale has Bluetooth connectivity available. Marsden does not provide software for receiving weight data from your scale. The M-420 is covered by the Marsden 4 Year Warranty.

  • Marsden M-420BT Portable Floor Scale with Bluetooth Connectivity

    What is the M-420BT?

The Marsden M-420BT is a lightweight, portable adult floor scale widely used by health visitors, school nurses and GP surgeries. It has Bluetooth connectivity for sending patient weight data instantly to a central database. This scale is accurate to 50g.

    How do wireless scales work?

Marsden wireless scales are fitted with a Bluetooth module. When a patient stands on the scale, the weight reading, once stabilised, will transmit from the scale to another device.

Currently, Marsden does not provide software for receiving data from wireless scales, however in cases where our customers have purchased wireless scales the software generally works in the same way. The software is set up to receive the data from the scale instantly as soon as the weight reading stabilises on the display, and populates the record for that patient.

In some cases the software will automatically calculate BMI if the patient’s height is inputted; otherwise, this information can be sent from the scale. If the date and time is set up on the scale, this will be sent via Bluetooth.

    Who uses the M-420BT?

The M-420BT is, like the standard Marsden M-420, is highly popular as a scale for health visitors, school nurses and GP surgeries - because it provides high accuracy readings and easy to use functions all in a portable design.

However, where the M-420BT is most popular is in telehealth initiatives, because the weight readings can be transferred via Bluetooth to patient records. The Marsden M-420BT allows care providers to monitor patients in their home, with, typically, the weight reading being sent automatically from the scale to a receiving device and then on to a monitoring station.

Find out more about wireless scales and telehealth here.

Why should I choose the M-420BT?

Marsden can provide wireless scales for almost any medical weighing need. Our M-420BT is a high accuracy, portable solution and perfect for telehealth initiatives. It is Class III Approved and MDD Approved.

This portable floor scale has a non-slip surface, with a robust casing meaning it can withstand years of use. It's light enough to be portable, too, and an optional carry case is available. It is covered by the Marsden 4 Year Warranty.

A patient’s height can be entered into the scale for quick and easy BMI calculation, and this, along with weight, can be sent wirelessly from the scale to your patient records.

The digital weight reading can be reversed, so it can face towards or away from the user. There is a Hold function which means the patient’s weight reading will stabilise and remain on the screen, even after they have stepped off the scale.

Just 6 x AA batteries are needed to power the scale, and from a full charge they can provide upto 100 hours of use (or 6000 weigh ins).

This robust medically approved weighing scale is a premium, professional product and will provide years of reliable weighing. For more information, or to talk to us about connecting wireless scales to your systems, call 01709 364296.

The NAWI directive which states all scales ‘used in the determination of mass in the practice of medicine for the purpose of monitoring, diagnosis and medical treatment’ must be Class III Approved. To become Class III Approved, a scale must go through rigorous testing by an EU notified body. It is standard for medical scales used in hospitals, GP surgeries and hospitals to be Class III Approved.

Additionally, the M-425 is MDD Approved, meaning it has passed approval tests as a medical device under the Medical Devices Directive (MDD 93/42/EEC).

    Who uses the M-425?

The M-425’s separate plug-in indicator makes this floor scale perfect for areas where weight readings are sensitive and need to be kept private, such as GP surgeries, schools and weight management programmes. School nurses like the scale’s ease of use an 50g accuracy, which has also made it a particularly popular scale for the National Child Measurement Programme, NHS CHAMPS child weighing initiative and Child Health Surveillance Programme.

Why should I choose the M-425?

If you need a portable, highly robust weighing scale for weight sensitive environments, choose the M-425. It has an accuracy of 50g, weighs upto a capacity of 220kg, and is covered by the Marsden 4 Year Warranty.

  • Marsden M-430 Floor Scale

    What is the M-430?

The Marsden M-430 is a lightweight, portable adult floor scale. It has been designed to be one of the most robust portable medical scales available, and is Class III Approved and MDD Approved.

What is a Class III Approved scale?

Class III Approved scales are built, tested, verified and calibrated to meet a specific standard. The NAWI directive states that all scales ‘used in the determination of mass in the practice of medicine for the purpose of monitoring, diagnosis and medical treatment’ must be Class III Approved. Approved scales are subject to rigorous testing by an EU notified body. This provides assurance to the user of the scales that they are accurate and reliable for medical use.

    What does MDD Approved mean?

MDD Approved means that the device meets strict safety requirements enforced (in the UK) by Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). The Medical Devices Directive (MDD 93/42/EEC) is one of three directives that cover all medical equipment intended to be used to diagnose, prevent, monitor or treat.

With the exception of hoist weighing attachments (for example, the Marsden M-600) it is not a requirement for weighing scales to be MDD Approved, only Class III Approved. However most Marsden professional medical scales are MDD Approved as an extra seal of quality and reliability.

    Who uses the M-430?

The M-430 scale is robust and long-lasting meaning it the ideal floor scale for Outpatients departments in hospitals, as well GP surgeries. Pharmacies favour a hard-wearing, easy to use scale like the M-430 for the NHS Health Check programme. The optional carry case means the scale can be used in the community without fuss too.

Why should I choose the M-430?

The M-430 is covered by the Marsden 4 Year Warranty.

The M-430 has a 220kg capacity and graduations to 200g. It is a highly dependable, digital alternative to dial scales, and widely used around the world. Its reinforced aluminium structure means it's built to last far longer than the average medical scale.

  • Marsden M-430BT Floor Scale with Bluetooth Connectivity

    What is the M-430BT?

The Marsden M-430BT is a lightweight, portable floor scale with Bluetooth for easy data transfer. This Class III Approved and MDD Approved scale is widely used by GP surgeries and health centres. It has been recognised by telehealth platform as an ideal scale to provide weight management services with their systems, and provides weight reading to the nearest 200g.

    How do wireless scales work?

Marsden wireless scales are fitted with a Bluetooth module. The patient stands on the scale and the weight reading (once stabilised) will transmit from the scale to another device.

Presently, Marsden does not provide software for receiving data from wireless scales, however we can provide support and guidance if you are developing your own software to capture data from the scales. We have done this for many telehealth providers across the UK and Europe.

Date, time and BMI data can be sent from the scale via Bluetooth.

    Who uses the M-430BT?

The M-430BT's Bluetooth connectivity options mean this scale is ideal for updating medical records via wireless transfer from the scale - either in a community setting or over secure hospital networks, thus reducing the risk of human error.

With Bluetooth connectivity, the M-430 has been highly popular with telehealth providers, as it means patients can be monitored in their own homes and their weight reading sent to a receiving device and then on to a monitoring station. Find out more about wireless scales and telehealth here.

Why should I choose the M-430BT?

The M-430BT is a highly portable scale for use in telehealth initiatives. It is MDD Approved and also Class III Approved which makes it legal to use this medical scale to monitor, diagnose and treat patients and target populations.

The 200g accuracy means that it is sufficiently accurate to weigh many of those with critical long term conditions (primarily COPD, chronic heart conditions, diabetes) and its strength and durability means it will provide accurate weight readings for years.

Even if you do not have systems set up to capture wirelessly-transmitted weight readings from the scale, purchasing the M-430BT means you are future-proofing your medical weighing devices. The straightforward Marsden protocols have made it simple for telehealth platform providers to link to their systems to enable the easy transfer of data from the scale. Weight data (gross weight, net weight, tare, date, time, BMI) is securely and simply transmitted automatically to the clinician by those patients benefiting from home monitoring.

An automatic hold of weight feature means that the patient does not need to bend down to stabilise the weight.

This scale is covered by the Marsden 4 Year Warranty.

These scales have been rigorously tested by an EU notified body, so you can be assured of its reliability, accuracy and repeatability.

An additional benefit of the M-530, aside from the low profile weighing platform that makes the scale easy to step onto, is its separate indicator.

A separate indicator is ideal for weight sensitive environments, because it means the weight reading is more discreet. It also means it is easier for the person taking the weight reading to see the display, as the indicator can be handheld.

Why should I choose the M-530?

  • Marsden M-510 Digital Portable Scale

    What is the M-510?

The Marsden M-510 is a premium quality, Class III Approved stand on scale, which is suitable for use on hospital wards, and in outpatient departments, weight management clinics and GP surgeries. The scale has a 250kg capacity and accuracy to 100g, and a separate indicator for weight sensitive environments.

What makes the M-510 different to other Marsden floor scales?

Marsden provides a complete range of professional, Class III Approved medical floor scales. Most Marsden stand on scales, such as the M-420 and M-430, have a display that’s part of the base.

Having a separate indicator, such as that on the M-510, means the scale is suitable for weight sensitive environments. It can also provide greater convenience without having to opt for a less portable column scale, in the sense that the indicator can be placed on a desk to view the weight reading.

Marsden has other Class III Approved floor scales with separate indicators in the form of the M-425 and the M-545, however the M-510’s indicator boasts the most features. There are more accessories than any other floor scale, and the indicator has a full numeric keypad for entering patient height (to calculate BMI).

The M-510 is also the only Marsden Class III Approved floor scale with an internal rechargeable battery. This provides around 55 hours of use between charges - potentially 3000 weigh-ins.

Why should I choose the M-510?

If you need a premium quality portable Class III Approved scale, that provides highly accurate weight readings displayed on a separate indicator, choose the M-510.

The indicator has three displays, which make viewing patient weight, height and BMI (BMI can be calculated by entering patient height using the full numeric keypad) much more easily.

There are many accessories available for the M-510: a printer can be added, which means a permanent printed record of patient weight, height and BMI can be created. Patient weight data can be sent wirelessly from the scale to a central database using the Bluetooth or Wifi technology. Either wireless option can be added to the scale for just £50 extra. Even if you do not currently use wireless technology to record patient information, by purchasing your scale with Bluetooth or Wifi you are essentially futureproofing your weighing equipment.

This scale is covered by the Marsden 4 Year Warranty for extra peace of mind.

The M-510 is constructed from high quality materials to ensure reliability and accuracy even when in regular use. The base of these scales is built to withstand years of constant use.

This is a truly portable weighing scale, due to a built in carry handle on the top of the scale. An optional carry case is also available to aid in transporting the scale between locations - which has made this scale a best-seller within the community.

  • Marsden M-545 Portable Floor Scale

    What is the M-545?

The Marsden M-545 is a portable, affordable Class III Approved floor scale. It has a separate indicator for weight sensitive environments. It provides accurate weight readings to the nearest 100g, upto a capacity of 250kg.

    What is BSA?

BSA stands for Body Surface Area and is the calculated surface area of the human body. For medical purposes BSA is most commonly used by NHS DEXA scanners to help calculate body composition and dosages for anti-cancer agents. In fact, it is an important way to calculate dosages for many medicines.

Since the first BSA formula was created in 1879, there have been many subsequent formulas introduced. Marsden scales - which we believe are the only weighing scales in the world with BSA calculation - use the most popular formula, DuBois. This formula is believed to be the most accurate formula. Find out more here.

Why would I need to use a Class III Approved scale?

The NAWI directive states that all scales ‘used in the determination of mass in the practice of medicine for the purpose of monitoring, diagnosis and medical treatment’ must be Class III Approved. Class III Approved scales are used by hospitals, GP surgeries, clinics and pharmacies.

Digital weighing scales that are Class III Approved are built, tested, verified and calibrated to meet a specific standard. They undergo far more testing (by a notified EU body) than non approved scales, providing assurance to the user that they are accurate, reliable and provide repeatable results - essential for medical weighing.

    Who uses the M-545?

This highly accurate scale has a separate indicator for weight sensitive environments where private readings are essential, such as GP surgeries, hospitals and clinics. The scale takes up minimum space in consulting rooms and can be stored away when not in use.

Why should I order the M-545?

If you need a Class III Approved weighing scale that’s portable, affordable and has a separate indicator for weight sensitive environments, choose the Marsden M-545.

The M-545 is covered by the Marsden 4 Year Warranty, and is highly robust for years of accurate weighing.

All features are accessible via the five buttons on the indicator, which has a bright, clear 3cm high LCD display.

The scale is powered by 6x AA batteries (which will provide upto 180 hours of use) or can be powered using the mains adaptor which is supplied. The integrated carry handle makes the scale extra portable, and a carry case can also be purchased.

    What is the M-550?

The Marsden M-550 is an affordable, accurate professional digital medical floor scale. This scale is Class III Approved, which means it can be used for the purpose of monitoring, diagnosis and medical treatment. It weighs to a capacity of 160kg and is perfect for GP surgeries.

What makes the M-550 a better choice than mechanical scales?

Traditionally, GP surgeries have used mechanical floor scales for consulting rooms. These dial scales can still be seen in use today; however, they are usually only Class IIII and will generally be accurate to 1kg.

With a 200g (up to 100kg) accuracy, the digital M-550 is up to 5 times more accurate than traditional mechanical scales.

The NAWI directive states all scales ‘used in the determination of mass in the practice of medicine for the purpose of monitoring, diagnosis and medical treatment’ must be Class III Approved. Therefore, not only does the M-550 weigh to a greater level of accuracy than traditional mechanical GP scales, it also has a more suitable level of approval for professional medical use.

    Who uses the M-550?

The M-550’s high accuracy means this floor scale is ideal for GP surgeries and pharmacies. GPs like the larger base which makes it easier to weigh more frail patients and those less steady n their feet. The M-550 is also popular as a precision bathroom scale: home users wanting medically approved accuracy at an affordable price favour the M-550.

Why should I choose the M-550?

If you need an affordable, professional weighing scale that meets minimum requirements for medical use, choose the M-550.

The M-550 is Marsden’s lowest priced Class III Approved medical scale, yet has a range of convenient and easy to use functions and is also covered by the Marsden 4 Year Warranty.

BMI can be easily calculated by using the buttons on the scale to input the height. Then, when the patient stands on the scale, BMI will be automatically calculated and displayed.

The M-550 GP Floor Scale is battery powered, needing just four AA batteries for 100 hours' continuous operation. A mains adaptor can be purchased as an extra.

What is a floor scale?

A floor scale, in a medical context, is a weighing scale that has a flat surface for patients to step on to and, usually, a weight display on one side. Some floor scales have a separate indicator which makes them suitable for weight sensitive environments.

Medical floor scales are popular in GP surgeries, hospitals, clinics, pharmacies and gyms because they are easy to use and light enough to be portable.

Marsden medical floor scales are all Class III Approved. Legally, if the scale is being used for determining weight for treatment, diagnosis or medication, it needs to be Class III Approved.

What is a Class III Approved scale?

A Class III Approved scale is built, tested, verified and calibrated to a specific standard. The Non-Automatic Weighing Instruments (NAWI) directive determines these standards, and states that all scales ‘used in the determination of mass in the practice of medicine patients for the purpose of monitoring, diagnosis and medical treatment’ must be Class III Approved. Approved scales are rigorously tested by an EU Notified Body, providing assurance to the user that the scales are accurate, reliable and deliver repeatability. Find out more here

How accurate does my floor scale need to be?

An incorrect weight reading could be a matter of life and death. The UKWF (UK Weighing Federation - the trade body for the UK weighing industry) has recommended that specific scale accuracies are used for various medical applications.

Floor scales that are used for general checking of an adult’s weight should be accurate to at least 500g; if it is used for regular weight assessment or measuring weight to assist medical diagnosis, graduations should be to 200g; when the scale is used in measuring weight for critical treatment (dialysis etc), readings should be to the nearest 50g/100g. Find out more here.

How do I know which floor scale to choose?

Our range of floor scales includes the M-420 and M-430: two of the most popular weighing scales available from Marsden, with robust construction, high accuracy and a tap-on feature. These scales are also lightweight enough for use by health visitors and, with a Bluetooth option available, are perfect for telehealth initiatives where patients are regularly weighing themselves at home.

For weight sensitive areas - like schools - we recommend a floor scale with a seperate indicator. The 220kg capacity, 50g accuracy Marsden M-425 is easy to use and robust; however if a higher capacity and features like BMI calculation are must-haves, we recommend the M-510. For weighing bariatric patients, the M-530 is available with 300kg or 500kg capacities, and its low profile base makes it much easier for bariatric patients to step on to.

Finally, there is the M-550: our lowest-priced Class III Approved floor scale. It has graduations to 200g (500g over 100kg) and a 160kg capacity. This floor scale is perfect for GP surgeries - it is the digital alternative to mechanical scales commonly used by GP surgeries, but with five times the accuracy.

Plus, at £95+VAT, the M-550 means there now really is no need to rely on outdated mechanical scales that can be, at best, inaccurate and, at worst, misleading.
