The V-25 Helps Identify Animal Dietary Issues At Banham Zoo

The V-25 helps identify animal dietary issues at Banham Zoo

Marsden’s range of veterinary scales are perfect for weighing large and small animals - and are used by vets nationwide. They are also used by a number of leading animal tourist attractions in the UK.

The Marsden V-25 was our best-selling animal scale for zoos last year, and it’s easy to see why with its fine accuracy, easy portability and excellent price. Banham Zoo liked the scale so much they came back and bought another - so naturally, we wanted to find out what they liked about it.

Banham Zoo is an award winning family attraction, with over 2000 animals from around the world, situated in 50 acres of parkland and gardens. The park opened in 1968 and is now part of the Zoological Society of East Anglia. We spoke to Mike Woolham, Animal Manager at the zoo, about where the V-25 fitted in their operation.

Lightweight and portable

Mike told us, “We needed a scale for weighing numerous animals from lemurs, small primates, otters, red pandas, small cats, meerkats… whatever fits into the scale’s weight range - and we needed something we could move easily between each enclosure for this.

“The V-25 is lightweight, very portable, accurate to the degree we needed for the animals we were weighing, and an excellent price.”

The Marsden V-25 has fine accuracy to 10g, as well as a 25kg capacity, which is ideal for these small animals. It is powered by 2x AAA batteries so can be used anywhere - and it’s easy to carry, weighing just 1.8kg.

Tried and tested

Mike continued, “We currently have two of these scales in use - and as we had already used the V-25 before we knew what we were getting, and all about the scale’s strengths.”

The scale includes Hold and Tare functions, a Memory Recall function for easy tracking of weight changes, and a bright LCD display.

Better than body scoring

“Many of our animals are trained to step on the scales so the weights we receive are trained via positive reinforcement.”

Mike concluded, “The scale enables us to keep an accurate record of our animals’ weight, weight gain or loss - and helps the senior staff identify health or dietary issues more quickly than by just body scoring.”
