Medical Scales

Medical Scales are weighing scales used in a medical environment – typically hospitals, GP surgeries, care homes and clinics. Weighing patients is an essential part of medical assessment and is also a key way of calculating drug dosages or treatment required.

Medical scales for every clinical setting

Accuracy is a clinical requirement in healthcare settings, and medical-grade weighing scales are designed to meet these standards.

In day-to-day practice, you need reliable readings and a design that suits the patients you’re working with: newborns, bariatric patients, or those who cannot stand unaided.

Our medical scales collection is built around healthcare environments, including hospitals, GP surgeries, care homes and clinics, where patient weight is an essential part of assessment.

Why choose Class III-approved medical weighing scales

Class III-approved medical scales are a legal requirement when accuracy is essential for treatment. In the UK, weighing patients for medical treatment is specifically recognised under legal metrology requirements for non-automatic weighing instruments.

Class III-approved medical weighing scales are designed to meet these strict performance standards, making them the appropriate choice when weight is used to calculate medication dosages or track changes.

Class III medical weighing scales should also be used when weight (and BMI) are needed for medication, treatment, diagnosis or monitoring.

The Patient Transfer Scale is a revolutionary way to weigh time critical or immobile
patients in seconds. It is a transfer slide with in-built weighing scale, and means
patients can be weighed during lateral transfer from trolley to bed, or bed to bed.

In 2021, the Patient Transfer Scale was awarded the Queen’s Award for Innovation – a highly sought after, prestigious award, which is the highest official accolade that a
British business can be given.

Professional Baby Weighing Scales

Baby scales are medical scales designed for weighing babies. Typically, baby scales
are highly accurate with graduations of between 2 and 10g to track the smallest
changes in a baby’s weight. Marsden baby scales are used in hospitals and GP
surgeries; and, as the scales are lightweight and portable, they are also suitable for
midwives and health visitors. Some models in the Marsden range are also suitable
for weighing toddlers.

Baby scales must be Class III Approved for medical use. Marsden professional baby
scales are all Class III Approved. All Marsden professional medical scales are available
with a four year warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

You must consider mobility and setting before choosing medical weighing scales. For patients who can stand safely, a stand-on or column setup is usually quickest for routine monitoring. If your patients cannot stand, chair and wheelchair solutions are much more appropriate.

Hoist, bed, trolley or transfer options support immobile patients. The simplest way to shortlist is to match the scale type to how the patient arrives to you (walking, seated, bedbound) and how often you’ll need to move the equipment between rooms.

With a baby's growth, the focus is tracking very small changes over time. These devices are designed for higher sensitivity. Baby medical scales often use high-graduation levels (e.g., 10g or 0.01 lb increments) to monitor these fluctuations.

While standard scales only offer a rough estimate, medical-grade weighing scales (Class III) utilise high-quality load cells and adhere to strict calibration tolerances to guarantee accurate patient monitoring.

Yes, all of our scales come with a standard manufacturer’s warranty. We also offer service and calibration contracts to ensure your equipment remains compliant and accurate year-round.

Many of our devices are equipped with data-transfer capabilities. These scales allow clinicians to send weight and BMI data directly to patient records, thereby reducing manual entry errors.
