Baby scales help Home-Start West Somerset find a new ‘weigh’ to support families
Published on 20 Feb 2026
Background
Home-Start West Somerset provides families in and around the local area with vital practical support and guidance aimed at making their everyday lives that bit easier.
Established in 2006, the charity offers support and friendship. It also runs helpful groups, including Baby Massage and The Dad Club, designed to encourage families with children under the age of five to feel supported and, most importantly, thrive.
Passionate about providing parents and their children with a comprehensive range of support, the charity wanted to be able to provide parents with a place they can easily weigh their babies in privacy and with minimal hassle.

The solution
Getting babies to sit still and not be upset by the weighing process can be challenging, which is why capturing their weight quickly and accurately is so essential. Fortunately, for Home-Start West Somerset, this is now a service they are now offering to their users after we sent them a set of our Marsden M-320 Portable Baby Scales.
Highly accurate, these baby weighing scales are Class III-approved, can weigh up to 50kg and are ideal for use within the community, as well as healthcare settings. The curved baby tray has been specifically designed to hold babies safely and securely, while the optional accompanying rucksack/carry case makes it easy to carry the scales around and set them up in a dedicated space or different areas. Meanwhile, the Tare functionality, makes light work of capturing an accurate reading first time around.

The results
Home-Start West Somerset uses its set of Marsden M-320 Portable Baby Scales up to eight times a week, providing families with an additional resource that’s easy to access and even easier to use. The charity particularly likes how easy the baby weighing scales are to move around because they are so lightweight. They also like the fact their scales are widely recognised within the healthcare profession as being the best.
“Before we had our scales, families used to struggle to find a dedicated place where they could easily pop in and weigh their babies. There is a weighing facility elsewhere locally, but people didn’t feel comfortable using it for weighing because it’s not in a dedicated family setting,” explains Dan James, the charity’s Dad Co-ordinator.
“We’re now providing another great service that’s such a huge help, especially for families who regularly visit us. So many people have commented on how much they appreciate the scales being here.
“What’s more, they’re so simple to use and easy and light to move. We leave them out on show to promote them because they’re used a lot.”
Our baby weighing scales are used by neonatal teams, health visitors and community clinics across the UK. For another glimpse at our scales being used in real life, read this case study: ‘Marsden M-300 Baby Scale Provides Precise Readings For Little Bellies Lactation.’
