Prickle-perfect precision: Using our B-250 animal scales to help rescue hedgehogs

Background

Henbrook Hedgehog Rescue is a non-profit organisation in Worcestershire that is dedicated to helping hedgehogs heal, thrive and return to the wild by providing them with the rehabilitation and medical attention they deserve.

Accurate weigh-ins are a crucial part of monitoring recovery and making sure the hedgehogs receive the right amount of medication. However, using generic, non-professional scales to weigh the hedgehogs, can generate inconsistent and inaccurate readings.

The solution

We sent Henbrook Hedgehog Rescue a set of our Marsden B-250 Bench and Floor Scales. Up until this point, they had used a set of basic household kitchen scales and would have had to have found some additional money to replace them.

“Our old scales did the job to a point, but they weren’t always reliable or precise enough, especially when we were weighing extremely small babies or weaker, more frail hedgehogs,” explains Holly, who runs Henbrook Hedgehog Rescue.

“Taking accurate weight readings is an extremely important task. The smallest fluctuation in weight indicates to us that we may be dealing with illness, infection, dehydration or feeding-related issues. And if the readings are inaccurate, it can potentially lead to us making the wrong decisions about treatment, medication feeding plans or release timing.”

The Marsden B-250 tabletop weighing scales are specifically designed to weigh animals that are on the smaller end of the scale. They’re compact, portable and lightweight, making them easy to move around and set up on different surfaces, as well as floor spaces.

Easy to wipe down and keep clean, these highly versatile animal scales also feature Tare functionality, so that any additional items, such as tissues and bedding is automatically deducted from the final reading for precision accuracy results.

The results

Henbrook Hedgehog Rescue use the Marsden B-250 scales multiple times a day, which is enabling them to make more informed decisions quickly and provide the best possible care case-by-case.

“They provide fast, accurate readings and are easy to use with the most nervous hedgehogs. Having the scales means we can now track the smallest of weight changes we may previously have missed,” adds Holly.

“Ultimately, we’re giving more hedgehogs the best possible chance of recovery and successful release back into the wild. Support from organisations like Marsden makes a real difference to small wildlife rescues like ours.”
