  • Marsden M-950 Bed Weighing Scale

    What is the M-950?

The Marsden M-950 is an easy to use, portable bed weighing scale. It makes weighing bedbound patients straightforward and hassle free with no discomfort to the patient. It consists of four pads that can be simply placed under the wheels of the bed, meaning there’s no need to move the bed to another room for weighing. A trolley is provided for transporting the pads between rooms and wards. The M-950 is Class III Approved.

What is a Class III Approved scale?

A Class III Approved scale is built, tested, verified and calibrated to meet a specific standard, so that it is legal to monitor, treat and diagnose patients. All weighing scales used for this purpose must be Class III Approved.

All Class III Approved medical scales undergo rigorous testing by an EU notified body to ensure reliability and accuracy and repeatability of readings.

How can I accurately weigh bedridden patients?

If a patient is bedbound, obtaining a weight reading can be difficult; however, in many cases an accurate weight reading is vital for administering the correct drug dosages or treatment.

If you need to weigh a bedridden patient, this can be done with the M-950 with no discomfort to the patient. Simply place the four weighing pads next to each wheel, switch on the scale and roll the bed onto the pads. For a truly accurate weight reading for the patient, best practice is removing the weight of the bed from the reading by using the Tare/Preset Tare functions.

An additional benefit of the M-950 is that the trolley allows you to move the scale between rooms and wards easily, raking the scale to the patient rather than the other way around. Alternatively, if you are weighing bedridden patients in the community, the M-950 can be purchased with carry cases to transport the pads and indicator.

    Who uses the M-950?

The M-950’s pads which can be positioned beneath the bed, mean that weighing can take place without the need to disturb bed bound patients. This is beneficial to a number of hospital wards and departments, particularly in palliative care and intensive care. The M-950 is also an easy to use scale for weighing care home patients.

Why should I choose the M-950?

Choose the M-950 if you need to weigh bedbound patients - and need a portable solution which can be moved between rooms, either by using the carry handles on each pad, the trolley or carry cases.

The pads are low profile, making this a bed weighing system suitable for almost any bed, and making it easy to push a bed onto the scale. The scale features Tare (for removing the weight of the bed from the display), Hold (to stabilise the weight reading on the display if the patient is moving) and BMI calculation functions.

The Marsden M-950 is made to order in our South Yorkshire factory - please contact us if you would like to find out about bespoke options available.

Ask about service and maintenance contracts for the M-950 by calling 01709 364296. The M-950 is covered by Marsden 4 Year Warranty.

  • Marsden M-955 Large Bed Weigher

    What is the M-955?

The M-955 is a high capacity, Class III Approved bed weigher, consisting of an indicator, trolley and four low profile weigh pads. The pads of the M-955 are slightly longer than our standard M-950 Bed Weighing Scale, making it perfect for accommodating the double castor beds made by Medstrom. The M-955 can be purchased as a 1000kg capacity scale (with 500g graduations) or a 600kg capacity scale (with 200g graduations).

What is a Class III Approved scale?

Class III Approved scales are built, tested, verified and calibrated to meet a specific standard, as determined by the NAWI directive. All scales ‘used in the determination of mass in the practice of medicine for the purpose of monitoring, diagnosis and medical treatment’ must be Class III Approved. These scales have been rigorously tested by an EU notified body to assure the user of reliability and accuracy.

Why should I choose the M-955?

Choose the M-955 if you need to weigh bedbound patients, and require longer pads to suit double castor beds, such as those from Medstrom.

    The M-955 has a choice of capacity and graduation options: 1000kg x 500g or 600kg x 200g.

Using the M-955 to weigh bedridden patients is easy. Simply switch the bed scale on, place a pad next to each castor and roll the bed onto the scale. There are low profile ramps on each pad to minimise effort required to roll the bed onto the pads.

The weight of the bed can be removed from the reading, leaving just the precise weight of the patient showing, by using Tare and Preset Tare functions. The numeric keypad allows the height of the patient to be entered - the scale can then automatically calculate BMI.

The four pads included have integrated carry handles, making the M-955 a portable scale. Additionally, the M-955’s trolley makes transporting the pads and indicator easy.

This bed scale can also be connected to a printer for a permanent record of a patient’s weight, or choose the optional Bluetooth or Wifi connectivity for information transfer to patient databases (please note: Marsden does not supply software for capturing data from the scale).

Service contracts are available for the M-955 - call Marsden on 01709 364296 to find out more. This scale is covered by the Marsden 4 Year Warranty.

The M-200’s high capacity, and its extra wide seat - more accommodating than standard medical chair scales - make it a common weighing scale for surgical wards. The M-200 is ideal for gaining the weights of frail and restricted mobility patients, meaning it can also be found in many care homes and nursing homes.

Why should I choose the M-200?

Choose the M-200 Chair Scale if you are weighing all sizes of patients, including plus size patients. Perfect for gaining weights of frail, breathless or restricted mobility patients, the M-200 provides high accuracy weight readings to Class III Approved medical standards.

  • Marsden M-250 Chair Scale with Stand Assist

What is the M-250 Chair Scale?

The M-250 is a Class III Approved medical chair scale with a lifting seat. This means less effort is required when getting a patient into, and out of, the chair. In most cases this feature could reduce the number of carers or nurses required to get the patient out of the chair from two to one.

Why is a lifting seat important?

Chair scales are essential when a patient or resident needs to be seated when weighed. However, as with all wheelchairs, the greatest challenge for staff is getting the person into and out of the chair. Depending on how mobile the patient is, this can demand a lot of effort, usually require two members of staff, and in extreme cases, there could be risk of back injury.

The M-250 changes this. It provides a better user experience by taking most of the strain of getting the patient into and out of the chair.

In fact, during testing, the lifting seat base was found to reduce the effort required to help a patient out of the chair by 70%.

Additionally, because of the reduction in effort required by staff, in most cases only one member of staff may be required where once there was a need for two.

    How does the M-250 work?

A small handheld remote control is used to lift and lower the seat base. The movement of the ergonomically-designed seat is slow and smooth to ensure ultimate comfort for the patient.

Once the seat is at its lowest position, with the patient seated, an accurate weight reading will be displayed on the indicator.

The remote control can then be used to raise the seat, helping the patient up to standing position.

Where can I find out more?

The M-250 is covered by Marsden’s pioneering 4 Year Warranty.

The ramps have a gentle incline to make it easier to push wheelchairs onto the scale. This wheelchair scale has a white base, ideal for patients with dementia or patients with visual-spatial problems.

What is a Class III Approved scale?

Class III Approved scales are built, tested, verified and calibrated in order to meet a specific standard. The NAWI directive states all scales ‘used in the determination of mass in the practice of medicine for the purpose of monitoring, diagnosis and medical treatment’ must be Class III Approved. Why is a white scale ideal for weighing patients with dementia?

Marsden’s white-base digital weighing scales, like this version of the M-650, and also our M-420 Floor Scale are designed to help dementia patients feel more comfortable when being weighed. The pattern, colour or texture of an object can increase stress and the risk of falls, which means that white scales are a more comfortable and safer alternative to the traditional black surface of many weighing scales. Find out more in this blog post.

    Who uses the white M-650?

This version of the M-650 is ideal for patients with dementia and visual-spatial issues to make them feel more assured when weighing. The large platform size is suitable for almost any size of wheelchair and is perfect for weighing in hospitals and care homes.

What is a bariatric scale?

A bariatric scale is a high capacity weighing scale designed to accommodate larger patients. Typically, they feature a large platform and high weighing capacity. For medical use, bariatric scales must be Class III Approved.

Marsden bariatric scales are available in capacities of upto 500kg and there are options for patients who can stand, can stand with support and those who are unable to stand.

What is a hoist scale?

A hoist scale is a weighing scale that attaches to a hoist, and allows a patient to be weighed when they are being lifted by the hoist.

Marsden’s portable hoist weighing attachments are suitable for use on most types of hoists for weighing large or bedridden patients. Marsden bariatric scales and hoist scales are Class III Approved.

Since 2015, the MHRA has stipulated that all hoist weighing attachments are Medical Devices Directive (MDD) Approved. The M-600 and M-605 manufactured by Marsden are MDD Approved and therefore the only hoist weighing attachments legal for use in the UK.

What are Class III Approved scales?

Class III Approved scales are weighing scales that have been built, tested, verified and calibrated to a specific standard. The Non-Automatic Weighing Instruments (NAWI) directive states that ‘all scales used in the determination of mass in the practice of medicine patients for the purpose of monitoring, diagnosis and medical treatment’ must be Class III Approved.

All Marsden professional medical scales are Class III Approved.

How do I know which bariatric or hoist scale to choose?

The bariatric or hoist scale required depends on the patient’s needs. If they are able to stand, a floor scale may be suitable - Marsden bariatric scales with handrails provide extra patient support.

If they need to be seated when weighing, take a look at the chair scale and wheelchair scale options. If they are bedbound, a hoist scale may be more appropriate. You can find out more about how to weigh a patient who can’t stand here.

With high capacities - up to 500kg - Marsden bariatric scales can cater for seated patients or wheelchair users. The Marsden M-650 range can accommodate almost every size of wheelchair. The M-651 features an indicator column; the M-652 and M-653 feature handrails so are also suitable for patients who can stand, but need support.

With hoist scales, weight is measured by a downward force exerted onto them. The Marsden M-600 and M-605 hoist weighing attachments fit to a hoist via the links on the scale and the hooks on the spreader bar of the hoist. The sling can then be added to the bottom of the scale. Both these scales are portable and can be moved from hoist to hoist weigh patients.

All Marsden professional medical scales are available with a four year warranty.
