  • Marsden M-999 Patient Transfer Scale

What is the Patient Transfer Scale?

The Patient Transfer Scale is a revolutionary way to weigh time critical or immobile patients in seconds. It is a transfer slide with in-built weighing scale, and means patients can be weighed during lateral transfer from trolley to bed, or bed to bed.

What are the benefits of the Patient Transfer Scale?

Weighing a patient at the point they are admitted to hospital is made easier with the Patient Transfer Scale. In order to administer medication or treatment accurately, the patient needs to be weighed. However, with immobile patients this is not easy, with the only solutions being bed weighing scales or hoist scales, both of which can be cumbersome and time consuming.

Lateral transfer of a patient from trolley to bed or bed to bed is an already existing - and essential - procedure. Therefore, the Patient Transfer Scale allows you to get a weight reading for these patients without taking up any time.

This helps you to reduce door to needle times and meet targets, and medication or treatment can be administered faster and with confidence by healthcare professionals. It also means less stress for staff, less stress for the patient, and the patient can be weighed with dignity.

Why do you need an accurate weight for patients?

A patient’s weight can be critical to delivering the right care and treatment at the right time. Getting a weight reading is particularly important when medication or treatment needs to be administered fast; however, in many cases it is not easy to weigh the patient.

The more accurate the weight reading, the more accurate the drug dosage and the more effectively the patient can be treated. The Patient Transfer Scale means that weight readings never need to be estimated again - so better patient care and patient outcomes.

Gaining an accurate weight for a patient is required as part of the five MUST (Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool) steps, to identify adults who are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition.

How is the Patient Transfer Scale used?

The Patient Transfer Scale, or PTS, can be used in the same way as a transfer board. Simply place the PTS across the trolley and bed, and move your patient across in line with your manual handling/patient transfer policies. You’ll just need to stop for 3-4 seconds as they pass over the PTS in order for the weight reading to register.

The Hold function can be used if required to stabilise the weight reading on the display. Watch the video above to see the PTS in action.

Where can I find out more?

You can find out more about the Patient Transfer Scale, including the story behind the scale and its inventor, former NHS Emergency Department nurse Gillian Taylor, on our dedicated Patient Transfer Scale microsite. Alternatively, speak to the Marsden team on 01709 364 296 or message us here.

  • Marsden M-125 Column Scale

    What is the M-125?

The Marsden M-125 is an entry level Class III Approved column scale. It features a completely redesigned, easy to use indicator, a 250kg capacity and weight readings to the nearest 100g. The scale can be used to calculate BMI and BSA.

    What is BSA?

BSA, or Body Surface Area, is the calculated surface area of the human body. BSA is commonly used by NHS DEXA scanners to help calculate body composition and dosages for anti-cancer agents. In fact, it is an important way to calculate dosages for many medicines.

BSA is often recommended as the principal basis for drug dosage as the rate of metabolism or redistribution of a drug is proportional to metabolic rate, which in turn reflects heat losses, which as for any warm object, are generally proportional to surface area.

There are many different formulas used to calculate BSA, but DuBois, the most popular and believed to be the most accurate, is the formula used by this scale.

We believe Marsden is the first digital weighing scales manufacturer in the world to include a BSA calculation function on a weighing scale. You can read more about BSA here.

  • Marsden M-950 Bed Weighing Scale

    What is the M-950?

The Marsden M-950 is an easy to use, portable bed weighing scale. It makes weighing bedbound patients straightforward and hassle free with no discomfort to the patient. It consists of four pads that can be simply placed under the wheels of the bed, meaning there’s no need to move the bed to another room for weighing. A trolley is provided for transporting the pads between rooms and wards. The M-950 is Class III Approved.

What is a Class III Approved scale?

A Class III Approved scale is built, tested, verified and calibrated to meet a specific standard, so that it is legal to monitor, treat and diagnose patients. All weighing scales used for this purpose must be Class III Approved.

All Class III Approved medical scales undergo rigorous testing by an EU notified body to ensure reliability and accuracy and repeatability of readings.

How can I accurately weigh bedridden patients?

If a patient is bedbound, obtaining a weight reading can be difficult; however, in many cases an accurate weight reading is vital for administering the correct drug dosages or treatment.

If you need to weigh a bedridden patient, this can be done with the M-950 with no discomfort to the patient. Simply place the four weighing pads next to each wheel, switch on the scale and roll the bed onto the pads. For a truly accurate weight reading for the patient, best practice is removing the weight of the bed from the reading by using the Tare/Preset Tare functions.

An additional benefit of the M-950 is that the trolley allows you to move the scale between rooms and wards easily, raking the scale to the patient rather than the other way around. Alternatively, if you are weighing bedridden patients in the community, the M-950 can be purchased with carry cases to transport the pads and indicator.

    Who uses the M-950?

The M-950’s pads which can be positioned beneath the bed, mean that weighing can take place without the need to disturb bed bound patients. This is beneficial to a number of hospital wards and departments, particularly in palliative care and intensive care. The M-950 is also an easy to use scale for weighing care home patients.

Why should I choose the M-950?

Choose the M-950 if you need to weigh bedbound patients - and need a portable solution which can be moved between rooms, either by using the carry handles on each pad, the trolley or carry cases.

The pads are low profile, making this a bed weighing system suitable for almost any bed, and making it easy to push a bed onto the scale. The scale features Tare (for removing the weight of the bed from the display), Hold (to stabilise the weight reading on the display if the patient is moving) and BMI calculation functions.

The Marsden M-950 is made to order in our South Yorkshire factory - please contact us if you would like to find out about bespoke options available.
