What is a baby scale?

Baby scales are medical scales designed for weighing newborn babies. Typically, baby scales are highly accurate with graduations of between 2 and 10g to track the smallest changes in a baby’s weight.

Marsden's digital baby weighing scales are used in hospitals and GP surgeries. As the scales are lightweight and portable, they are also suitable for midwives and health visitors. Some models in the Marsden range are also suitable for weighing toddlers.

Baby scales must be Class III Approved for medical use. Marsden professional baby scales are all Class III Approved.

All Marsden professional medical scales are available with a four-year warranty.

What is a Class III Approved scale?

All Marsden professional baby scales are Class III Approved. A Class III Approved scale is a weighing scale that has been built, tested, verified and calibrated to a specific standard. Since 2003, it has been a requirement in the UK and across the EU that ‘all scales used in the determination of mass in the practice of medicine patients for the purpose of monitoring, diagnosis and medical treatment’ must be Class III Approved, according to the Non-Automatic Weighing Instruments (NAWI) directive 2014/31/EU.

Class III Approved scales undergo a rigorous testing programme conducted by an EU Notified Body. Once approved, the scale is issued with a Type Approval Certificate. The scale will then carry an ‘M’ and a ‘III’ logo on its dataplate. Class III status assures the user that the scale has reached a minimum level of quality and reliability and is fit for use as a medical weighing scale.

How accurate does my baby scale need to be?

The UK Weighing Federation (UKWF) recommends that specific scale accuracies are used in certain situations - as recording an incorrect weight in a medical context could have serious consequences.

A baby scale used for checking the weight of a baby for their record should be accurate to at least 50g. Accuracies can be broken down as follows:

  1. Regular monitoring, assessing weight change, measuring weight to assist with medical diagnosis - accurate to at least 10/20g
  2. Measuring weight for critical treatment such as dialysis - accurate to at least 5g
  3. Recording birth weight - accurate to at least 20g
