  • Marsden MBF-6000 Body Composition Scale with Printer

What is the MBF-6000 Body Composition Scale?

The Marsden MBF-6000 is a Class III Approved body composition scale which is widely used in hospitals and gyms - and increasingly by sports clubs. Marsden body composition scales are closer to DEXA standard than any other body composition scale tested.

This scale has a printer for a permanent record of all the readings; this also makes it perfect for monitoring key fitness data for sports professionals, semi-professionals and the serious amateur athlete.

What is a body composition scale?

A body composition scale is a weighing scale that provides multiple measurements giving you a clearer image of body health that simply taking a weight cannot provide. All Marsden body composition scales are Class III Approved.

Body composition scales use bioelectrical impedance to estimate the fat content of your body. When you step onto the scale, a very safe and very small electrical current passes through your body. Electrical current flows through water, fat and muscle mass at different speeds, and therefore the scale can calculate how a body is composed of these elements based on the speed of the current.

What readings do Marsden body composition scales provide?

Marsden Body Composition Scales have been updated for 2019 and now provide even more body composition measurements. This scale now provides the following readings: Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), Total Body Water (TBW), Fat Free Mass (FFM), Fat Mass (FM), Body Fat Percentage, Muscle Mass (MM), Protein Mass (PM), Extracellular Water (ECW), Intracellular Water (ICW), Skeletal Muscle (SM), Visceral Fat Area Level (VFA), Metabolic Age (AGEM), Weight and BMI. The scale will also give you an overall health score.

For more information about body composition scale readings, download the product sheet from the Downloads section above.

All readings are provided on a print-out, meaning you have a permanent hard copy of your readings. This means these scales are ideal for personal trainers, fitness coaches and travelling consultants to keep track of their client’s composition and body health.

Who uses the MBF-6000 Body Composition Scale?

The MBF-6000 is provides highly accurate readings to gym and slimming club members. The scale is also portable (an optional carry case is available) for use by mobile physicians, physiotherapists, nurses or personal trainers. Dieticians also like this scale for its ease of use and comprehensive body composition readings.

Why should I choose the MBF-6000?

If you need an affordable, portable body composition scale, choose the MBF-6000. It’s easy to use and this version provides all body composition readings on a print-out.

This 300kg capacity scale was developed by Marsden and Hull York Medical School. The Marsden body composition range was found to be closer to DEXA standard than any other body composition scale we tested.

The MBF-6000 is Class III Approved - therefore approved for medical use - and is also approved under the Medical Devices Directive (MDD 93/42/EEC).

The MBF-6000 has Hold and Tare functions. Hold stabilises the weight reading on the indicator and Tare removes unwanted weight.

The Marsden MBF-6000 is a fraction of the price of its competitors and is backed by robust British research. It is covered by the Marsden 4 Year Warranty and can be ordered next-day from our factory in Rotherham when ordered before 1pm.

  • Charder MA601 Advanced Body Composition Analyser

    What is the MA601?

The MA601 is the most sophisticated body composition scale in Marsden's range. It provides a comprehensive analysis of health and fitness, allowing you to accurately and effectively monitor your progress over time. All body composition measurements are provided via Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA).

    What is Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis?

Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis is a technique used to estimate body composition. A weak electric current is passed through the body, and the speed at which the current flows through the body determines the amount of fat, water and muscle content.

Advanced body composition analysers like the MA601 use BIA to provide a full breakdown of body composition. Traditional BIA body composition scales will use one frequency; the MA601 uses three.

For example, low frequencies have difficulty overcoming and passing through cell membranes, so are well suited for measuring extracellular water. High frequencies can pass through cell membrane walls, so they can provide intracellular readings.

    How does the MA601 work?

Touchscreen operation means the MA601 is user-friendly and allows you to see your body composition results in seconds.

With shoes and socks removed, simply step onto the scale and enter basic information, such as age, height and name/ID, and when prompted, lift up the hand electrodes. Once the MA601 has completed your body measurement, basic results will be displayed on the screen. You can then press Print to see a comprehensive print-out of your results.

Why does the MA601 not have an athlete setting?

Traditionally, BIA devices have been less accurate for ‘abnormal’ populations such as athletes. A commonly used fix has been to offer a separate ‘athlete mode’, using specialised algorithms. Unfortunately, because there is no clear consensus on how to define ‘athlete’, oftentimes users wouldn’t know which mode to select, resulting in inaccurate results when used by ‘non-athletes’.

What’s more, sprinters and weightlifters are both athletes - yet their body types are very different, so an athlete mode that’s based on “endurance athletes” might be less accurate for “strength athletes, and vice versa.

What’s the difference between the MA601 and other Marsden body composition scales?

This scale provides even more readings than our MBF-6000/MBF-6010, including: Intracellular Water (ICW), Extracellular Water (ECW), Total Body Water (TBW), Soft Lean Mass (SLM), Fat-Free Mass (FFM), Body Fat Mass (BFM), Skeletal Muscle Mass (SMM), Percentage Body Fat (PBF), Body Mass Index (BMI), Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), Total Energy Expenditure (TEE), Phase Angle, Fat-free Mass Index (FFMI), Skeletal Muscle Index (SMI) and Impedance.

Another benefit is that the scale also gives recommended improvements for each client, based on their results.

What is a body composition scale?

A body composition scale is a weighing scale that provides a calculation of body health based on a number of metrics. The scale will provide a weight reading, usually BMI as well, and then readings such as Fat Mass, Total Body Water content and the amount of fat in your body shown as a percentage.

In the case of Marsden body composition scales, readings provided are Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), Total Body Water (TBW), Fat Free Mass (FFM), Fat Mass (FM), Body Fat Percentage, Weight and BMI.

How does a body composition scale work?

Marsden body composition scales use biometrical impedance to calculate the readings. A safe and very small electrical current flows through the body from the base of the scale. Electrical current flows through water, fat and muscle mass at different speeds, and the scale measures this speed to calculate how a body is composed of these elements.

BMI is also measured by our body composition scales, and there are two ways the scales can measure this. Choose an optional automatic height measure and the height will automatically appear on the scale’s display and calculate BMI using this. If you have a body composition scale without a height measure, or with a manual/digital height measure, you can enter height using the full numeric keypad. The scale will then calculate BMI.

How accurate are body composition scales?

Marsden body composition scales were developed with help from Hull York Medical school. Hull York Medical School undertook all of the clinical research underlying the algorithm and compared it to DEXA, the ‘gold standard’ of body composition measurement. Their research found that the Marsden scale measurement was within 3% of DEXA, whereas a comparable body composition scale by a competitor was within around 6% of DEXA.

All the scales are above are Class III Approved and MDD Approved for precision accuracy in medical weighing.

What does Class III Approved and MDD Approved mean?

In the UK, the NAWI (Non Automatic Weighing Instruments) Directive on medical weighing states that for the “determination of mass in the practice of medicine for weighing patients for the purpose of monitoring, diagnosis and medical treatment” a Class III Approved scale must be used.

The use of Class III Approved scales in a medical environment is now necessity across the EU.

A scale being approved means that it has been checked and verified to ensure they fall within a certain set of parameters. The extensive testing that Class III Approved scales are subject to is not carried out on standard scales, meaning a Class III Approved scale should provide greater reliability and repeatability (i.e consistent weight results).

The Medical Devices Directive (MDD 93/42/EEC) is one of three directives that cover all medical equipment. This directive covers equipment that is intended to be used to diagnose, monitor or treat patients. The Medical Devices Directive is enforced within the UK by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). Although MDD Approval on weighing scales is not a necessity in the UK, most Marsden medical scales have been certified MDD Approved.

Why should I choose a Marsden body composition scale?

The scales on this page offer the best value for money you are likely to find, taking into account their accuracy, reliability and price tag, plus the fact that they are Class III Approved and MDD Approved.

The MBF-6000 and MBF-6010 Body Composition Scales are available with a printer, which provides all the body composition information, along with date and time, in the form of a print-out Both body fat scales are available without the printer - however we recommend, in order to get the full benefit of what these scales provide, that they are purchased with a printer.

As a portable medical scale, the MBF-6000 is the perfect professional body composition scale for personal trainers, fitness coaches and travelling consultants. The MBF-6010 is ideal for clinicians and physiotherapists - and with an optional coin box, pharmacies and health centres can earn a revenue from this multi-functional medical column scale.
