What is a swab scale?

A swab scale, also referred to as a theatre scale or mortuary scale, is a weighing scale which is used in laboratory, mortuary or pathology environments. Typically, swab scales are highly accurate and carry an IP rating. These types of scales are ideal for use in operating theatres for swab or organ weighing.

What does the scale’s IP rating mean?

The IP rating refers to the level of protection the scale has. The first digit (e.g '6') refers to how protected the scale is to dust, with the second digit (e.g '5') signifying protection against water and other liquids.

IP65 rated scales have protection from moisture when wiped down with a damp cloth.

IP67 scales are waterproof against moisture and can be protected by being washed down. IP68 scales can survive in the most punishing environments with full waterproof protection.

How do I know which swab scale to choose?

All swab scales available from Marsden are Class III Approved, portable and highly accurate, to the nearest 1g.

The Digi DS-502 has an IP65 rating so can be wiped down to keep hygienic. It has a large LCD display and is powered by 4x C-sized batteries.

The DS-673SS is IP68 waterproof and has a bright red LED display. It is powered by rechargeable battery which has a battery life of 40 hours before the scale needs to be recharged.
